‘Wrong’, ‘Inexplicable’ – Celtic Weekend Fallout Continues

A decision which could have cost Celtic dearly at Tynecastle has been tipped to be a ‘training point’ for officials going forward as the fallout from the incident continues.

Referee Nick Walsh didn’t spot a hand ball in the box from Hearts even though he had a great view. After that, VAR didn’t intervene and there was no proper check of the incident, despite it being a clear penalty to Celtic.

The bhoys would then fall behind to Hearts on the day before rallying to score three second half goals to finish the game 4-3 on the day.

Everybody has had their say on the incident with most football minded people in disbelief at the ineptitude of the decision.

Former Referee Steve Conroy is no different. Telling the Get Involved Referee podcast the decision was inexplicable: “It was wrong. All I can think is that either Nick didn’t see it or he didn’t think it was a deliberate handball.

“I can only assume that Nick decided it wasn’t a penalty – or didn’t see it – and then Steven decided it wasn’t a penalty. But they were both wrong and it’s inexplicable, really.

“The incident will be used by the SFA, I imagine, as a tool to show what should have happened. They will use it as an example of how a decision was wrong – it will be a training point.”

There was always going to be teething problems, but the decision taken was so basic. Stevie McLean in the VAR room should’ve spotted it straight away and alerted the referee.

If you can’t call the basics right, what chance have you got. The same double act will pitch up at Ibrox at the weekend when Aberdeen take on The Rangers. I wonder if they’ll learn enough by then.
