Ange Postecoglou faces a tough decision selecting his midfield for the return leg of the tie against RB Leipzig at Celtic Park.
Celtic captain Callum McGregor is likely to return to action for the club after the World Cup meaning that the Hoops boss will need to find the right mix in midfield before then.
Oliver Abildgaard replaced McGregor in the 3-1 defeat away to RB Leipzig and it was assumed that the Danish midfielder would slot right in but that may not be the case.
Matt O’Riley revealed yesterday that he has previously played in a deeper midfield role during his time at Fulham and is comfortable playing there.
This was something that Postecoglou used at the weekend as he partnered the 21-year old with Reo Hatate and Sead Haksabanovic which the manager seemed pretty pleased about.
Haksabanovic has a great versatility to his game and after his performance in Perth, will likely start for Celtic against RB Leipzig – the question is where?
Domestically, Postecoglou may look to also give some more game time to the likes of Aaron Mooy and James McCarthy.
The latter has not featured too often for the Hoops this season but showed that he still has something in his game as his late pursuit of the ball led to Celtic’s last gasp winner in Perth with the former Crystal Palace and Everton star playing in Alexandro Bernabei.
Celtic’s game depends on getting the ball from back to front very quickly which McGregor is expertly good at.
Playing O’Riley as the pivot may give Celtic that intensity which they will need against RB Leipzig.
