Andy Robertson Reveals Why Celtic Released Him

It’s been well documented that Andy Robertson was in Celtic’s youth academy but was released before he made it into the senior side.

After his Celtic exit, he joined Queens Park and started his senior career at the club. He was a standout, and it wasn’t long before Dundee United picked him up.

He shone with the Arabs too, and a move down south was inevitable. The left-back joined Hull and was at the club for a few seasons before he earned his move to Liverpool.

Ever since, he’s been a regular in the side and played 90 minutes in the Champions League final, making him the first Scottish player to win the tournament since Darren Fletcher in 2008, who was an unused substitute.

There have been many theories as to why Robertson was released by Celtic, but his story isn’t unique, with many players released by the club each year.

Robertson appeared on Darrel Currie’s podcast and explained his version of events.

“Height was a part of it, also the physicality. I wasn’t exactly muscle-bound; I wasn’t built or things like that.

‘I got released when there was a big change at Celtic. We were, unfortunately, moving away from the Tommy era. No one would’ve wanted to move away from that if we could’ve sorted it.

“Unfortunately, he passed away and lost his battle, which meant Celtic had to replace him, which was an impossible task. They went down a different route and tried to change a little bit, and that summer, a lot of players got released at all ages.”
