Ange Hits Nail on the Head with VAR Answer

After a week of controversy, the spotlight has shifted back to the old VAR debate. Following Willie Collum’s display at Easter Road and Kevin Clancy’s performance at Parkhead, it’s been a topic of debate all week, despite the Champions League draw.

Scotland’s had everything from wrong, offside calls to red cards issued to players unnecessarily while red card-worthy challenges are going unpunished. Ross County suffered with bans handed to players after the referee failed to deal with matters on the pitch in their match against Kilmarnock.

VAR is set to arrive in Scotland after the World Cup in November/December, but that’s not soon enough for many. Bringing the technology in halfway through a season makes no sense, but it’s happening regardless.

In Friday’s press conference, the Celtic manager was asked about his thoughts on VAR, while other Scottish managers were having a meltdown. He gave a very level-headed response. Via Celtic TV, Ange Postecoglou said

“I’ve had the experience of VAR; I’ve had it in Japan, when I was national team boss, and we had it in Europe last year for us as a club, so I’m well versed in it. I think it should be implemented in the Scottish game because I think every league in the world will have it sooner rather than later.

“My view on it is the same as it’s always been if you think that refereeing decisions are that important that they change games, them VAR ain’t going to chance your outlook. I’ve never worried about that stuff. Even with VAR there are going to be mistakes made and stuff missed.

“Our football club and me in particular, I’ve never focussed on that allowing that to judge our outcomes. If a decision goes against us, it goes against us. Our job is to get on with it. It’ll be the same with VAR.

“The people that talk about refereeing decisions today will still be talking about it when VAR is around, and the ones that done, still won’t.”
