The major talking point next season will be the introduction of VAR, and more specifically, the introduction of VAR halfway through the season.
The SPFL won’t have their ducks in a row until after the World Cup break, but will institute the technology from December onwards.
It means there’s going to be a lot more arguments than usual, and a lot of ‘if Var was in then, we would be three points clear’ stuff.
For Celtic, they’ll negotiate a home Glasgow Derby game without VAR. In the second derby of the season at Ibrox, there will be VAR.
It throws up the possibility of similar incidents happening in both games but one being punished and the other not. Scottish football doesn’t need an excuse to argue – and this will give everyone ammunition and talking points until next season is in the books.

VAR is only a good thing if the people operating it are competent. As we’ve witnessed in other countries, even full time referees and officials are struggling with decisions. I can’t imagine Scottish footballs line of officials will fair any better.
I think we’re going to see a lot of bad tackles that’ll still go unpunished or leniently dealt with. More soft penalty decisions and just general chaos.
And to boot, goal line technology will NOT be introduced with VAR because the league have decided not to fund it.
I think for this to work at all, fans just have to accept that next season will throw up some really unfair moments for all clubs.
