Celtic take on Raith Rovers next week in the League Cup at Celtic Park, and like the rest of the games so far this season, no away fans will be lower inside the stadium.
Celtic have not been able to facilitate away supporters because they still need to displace Celtic season ticket holders who are currently in the ‘red zone’ in the family stand where the players currently sit.
It means no away presence for Raith Rovers who would have likely brought a decent crowd with them.
Former Celtic scout and current Rovers boss John McGlynn has branded it disappointing.
As quoted by the Courier, John said: “From the fans’ perspective, it’s disappointing. It’s been a while since Rovers have been given that opportunity. Paul [Smith, assistant manager] was telling me about the time Raith went there in 2012.
“I left a few months prior [to become Hearts manager] so didn’t experience it that time we were there. It doesn’t happen too often and I know the fans would have given us real backing in their numbers. It would have been nice for us to have that support, too, and give the supporters the chance to watch us play on that stage.
“But it’s a decision that has been made out-with our control and we’ll just need to accept that.”
The game will likely be far from a sell out but the Home cup ticket scheme will make sure a lot of the tickets are automatically snapped up for the League cup tie.
The game is on Premier Sports for Raith fans who do want to watch the tie. It will be a chance for Celtic to get further in a competition they dominated for so long before last seasons dramatic collapse.
The League cup is Ange Postecoglou’s first chance of silverware this season. Hopefully the hoops can come through the game with a win to progress to the next round.
Celtic are overwhelming favourites but as we witnesses last season — that doesn’t guarantee anything.
