Pre-Mach Thoughts – Could James McCarthy Be Set For First Start

This weekend, Celtic enter the Premier Sports Cup as they face off against Hearts at Celtic Park tomorrow afternoon.

Off the back of two impressive home displays that saw the Hoops score nine goals without reply against both Dundee and Jablonec, Ange Postecoglou will have some decisions on his hands regarding team selection.

With this uptake in form, you wouldn’t imagine the 55-year old will be looking to make wholesale changes to the side, even ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Europe League tie, as we look to continue this momentum.

One decision that could interest Celtic fans is the involvement of the latest midfield recruit James McCarthy.

The Irishman has been linked with a move to the Hoops for years, so this debut certainly has felt like it has been coming.

With the lack of pre-season, though, the 30-year old will have to get up to speed with things under Ange Postecoglou.

If fit, you would think this cup tie could be the best place to introduce McCarthy into the side and see how he fares.

Of course though, the midfield three of Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic has been unplayable at times in the last two games.

So, there is a chance that the former Everton and Crystal Palace man makes his first appearance for his boyhood heroes off the bench tomorrow afternoon.

With the quality that McCarthy can possess, as we have seen in the English Premier League over the years, Postecoglou will likely be keen to see what he can do in this side.
