Former EPL striker Kevin Phillips says he’s surprised Celtic are looking to sign Charlie Wyke this summer.
The Sunderland striker is out of contract and has yet signed a new deal with the Black Cats.
The frontman scored over 30 goals last term leading to a lot of interest in him since the close season began.
Celtic are about to go through a substantial rebuild and will need reinforcements in just about every area. Phillips admits his surprise at Celtic’s interest but believes it could make sense if they’re looking for an impact sub.
“I’m assuming Celtic are offering him five times what Sunderland are and he can command more because he is a free agent.
“I think he could do a job up at Celtic but only if you give him the right service. You have to play a certain way when he is in your side, you need to be direct.
“Sunderland went from back to front quite early at times. If you are playing with wingers he will always provide you an option in the box. He is always in and around the penalty spot.
“His signing would be a big indication as to how Postecoglou plans to play next season.
“I am surprised they want to sign him in truth but on a free, he may be used as an impact sub. He will probably not play every week.”
It’s a round about way of saying Phillips doesn’t think Charlie is good enough to be a Celtic player.
Sunderland fans we’ve spoken with have claimed Wyke is not your typical 30 goal striker and has many deficiencies within his game.
I have to admit, it looks like Celtic like this player more because he’s a free agent. Could he be an impact sub? Perhaps.
Celtic have Ajeti at the moment, Edouard is expected to leave and Griff is still to be offered a new deal. There is room for a striker but maybe a more mobile option.
