‘That’ll be a Hard One to Sell’ Sutton’s Major Celtic Warning

Chris Sutton has used his RecordSport column to bemoan the idiocy at Celtic and the growing frustration among the support.

The bhoys still don’t have a manager over 100 days after Neil Lennon was nudged out of Celtic Park by a board who did everything to keep the Irishman on board as we imploded.

They are now as slow in trying to find his replacement as they were dismissing the former Celtic captain.

Chris accepts Celtic were taken for a ride by Eddie Howe and the Englishman has set them back months.

The Englishman did concede it was Celtic’s fault for working on a gentleman’s agreement rather than doing things properly.

Ange Postecoglou looks like the man who will be taking over at this point but still the Australian hasn’t been announced for a majority of reasons.

We’re getting to the point Celtic will be back at Lennoxtown in under two weeks time and not have the new manager in place.

Sutton believes there’s a whole raft of managers who could’ve come into the club and the continued silence from Dominic McKay over what’s going on is also not good enough.

Sutton wrote: ‘Howe has taken the club for a ride and doesn’t come out of this well.

‘But Celtic should never have allowed it to get to this stage. The contingency plan had to be in place but apparently this is it and we’re another week down the line and we’re still waiting.

‘There are plenty of decent out-of-work managers that could have walked in the door at the drop of a hat.

‘But instead there’s just talk about imminent appointments and advanced talks, and continued silence from new chief executive Dominic McKay.’

As we understand things, McKay has no real power at the moment and is being lead by Peter Lawwell until the end of the month when he steps down.

Addressing a potential Ange Postecoglou appointment, the Englishman believes Kennedy and Strachan staying on to help would be a tough sell.

‘It’s a sorry state of affairs and Postecoglou is the one who’s going to have to pick up the pieces.

‘He’s on to a hiding to nothing. At the moment there are players who are heading out of the door and no idea of who is coming in. There are huge questions to be asked about Postecoglou’s own backroom team.

‘Will he bring in his own or will there still be roles for John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan.

‘That’ll be a hard one to sell to fans who already need to be won over by the new boss. Postecoglou might be a top operator but he’ll have his hands tied behind his back.

‘You have to give him a chance though. By all accounts he’s highly rated in Australia and Japan. He gets his sides to play intense, high-pressing football and he likes to light a fire under his dressing rooms.

‘That is all very well and good, but all managers say that kind of stuff. The proof will be in the pudding. The reality is Celtic are taking a colossal gamble at a time when they can’t afford to be taking risks.’
