Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has been praised for waiving his right to a one-year contract extension at English League One side Sunderland.
At one point this season, McGeady was left in the lurch at the ‘sleeping giant’, who find themselves in the League One play-off semi-final.
After the appointment of a new manager though, the Irishman was brought back into the fold and has played a big part in their push for promotion.
The winger has played 29 games this season and is due a one-year extension, after today’s game against Lincoln in which the Black Cats find themselves 2-0 down after the first leg.
The problem for them is, his wages would cost a whopping 19k a week, which could cause trouble, especially if they are to stay in the third tier of English football once again next season.
However, as reported by Sun Sport, in a great gesture McGeady has waived his right to this extension in order to play tomorrow’s game without putting Sunderland in that situation.
It is a class act from the former Celtic academy graduate. He could have easily either played today and secured another year on a heavy wage or been missing for what could be a crucial tie.
Instead, he has put that to the side for now so that the side can focus on attempting to bring themselves back into the game and make it to Wembley for a second time this season.
