Back in the summer, Celtic were on the trail of then Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes. The new Scottish international has been earning rave reviews for the national side after choosing Scotland over Australia.
In the summer, when Celtic were weighing up their striker options there was a lot of talk about Steven Fletcher combining into the club, as reported by Mail Sport.
Celtic were looking for a troublesome striker who could hassle defenders, this was before they brought in Albian Ajeti from West Ham for a healthy fee.
Speaking after Dykes performance against Serbia on Thursday night, BBC Pundit Billy Dodds can’t believe Celtic didn’t make a proper move for the striker and he went to QPR for a little over two million.
“This guy has something else for me, and that’s that pace and mobility. I don’t think Steven Fletcher [had that].” Dodds said on BBC Sportsound as he asserted his disbelief at either Glasgow side not snapping Lyndon up.
“Very similar, and I can understand that comparison because there was an intelligence about Fletcher when he did go up. It wouldn’t just be a flick-on, it would be a hold up to bring players into the game.
“I’m not saying Dykes is a better player yet, he’s still got a way to go, but on the evidence I’ve seen, I was surprised that the Old Firm never had a go at him for £2 million. Incredible. Especially the way he played against them.
“This guy, he can run like the wind. This guy’s got more to his game and more potential.”
Celtic haven’t struggled to score goals this season, so even making the point that we’ve missed out on Lyndon isn’t really hurting us. It’s our defence which has been the issue, and it’s not been lost on some Celtic supporters Declan Gallagher has been solid for his country while they continue to have doubts over Shane Duffy’s credentials.
Hopefully, the defender will come good, Celtic have been burned in the SPFL striker marker before with Nadir Ciftci who did well for Dundee Utd but never did much in a Celtic jersey, the fear of Dykes flopping and being unproven would have weighed heavily on any decision to go for him,.
