Postponed: Scottish Transfer Window Not Open For Business

The SFA has confirmed to The Athletic that Scotland’s transfer window has been postponed, allaying fears clubs would be disadvantaged by other European windows not opening to much later in the year.

Any association can have a window open for as much as twelve weeks but if Scotland’s window opened as scheduled on June 10, it would have to close at the end of August. With some leagues not opening their window until August/September, it would be extremely difficult for clubs to do business. Couple that with the Champions League qualifiers being later, the window would have shut before Celtic knew their fate.

The SFA can apple to FIFA is they want to cut their summer window into two separate six week periods. If the Scottish game goes ahead as planned at the start of August, the window will need to open before that date so clubs can register players. However, if they do it in two stages, it would afford clubs the opportunity to dip into the market alongside other European leagues.

Overall, it has been a good decision to delay the window.
