Former Ibrox striker and now social media personality on OpenGoal, Kevin Kyle has revealed Celtic and more specifically Neil Lennon was interested in signing the big man back during the Irishman’s first run as Celtic boss.
However, Kyle said it all fell apart because Celtic did a background check on what he was like off the field.
Neil Lennon confirmed to the striker that he had enquired about Kevin and even gone to watch him but ultimately didn’t make a move.
“I remember coming up to Glasgow on a Tuesday night for a night out, and I met Neil Lennon in Bar 29.” Kyle told SunSport.
“I says, ‘how you doing?’
“And he says: ‘How you doing, big man?
“‘We were down watching a game at Carlisle versus Hartlepool, we went down to look at somebody but you stood out.
“‘But we’ve heard you like a drink and that, and tonight you’ve proved it’.
“I was devastated. I said I don’t really drink that much.
“He went: ‘Well, we did a wee background check and we heard you like a wee swally and that’.”
Kyle is a massive Celtic fan and the chance of playing for the bhoys would have been something he would have jumped at. Later in his career he would sign for The Rangers in a deal he couldn’t turn down. He was paid a lot of money to play in the lower leagues.
Kyle was never the most mobile striker and it was probably for the best.
Neil Lennon clearly looking for a big target man at the time.
