Little known Celtic duo Jonathan Afolabi and Lee O’Connor came to Celtic with a view to getting in the first team pretty quickly.
Two players who had great reputations down south were convinced to come up to Scotland and try to make their mark as quick as possible.
By January, neither had started a game for Celtic and were then loaned out to the lower leagues with Dunfermline and Partick Thistle.
Jeremie Frimpong came from Manchester City and managed to do what both Jonathan and Lee were looking to do and make an impression early on. Jeremie is now a first-team player and has proven he has what it takes.
It’s our understanding Jonathan and Lee were told they would get first-team opportunities this season but that hasn’t panned out. Being loaned out and willingly wanting to go shows their endeavour but they will want to know it’s going somewhere.
Next season, whenever that might be, will be very telling. If both players still can’t get a look in, then they, along with their reps might want to look at other options.
O’Connor was highly regarded at Manchester Utd and with his reputation could look to get a move down south if Celtic don’t utilise him.
I’ve personally seen O’Connor on a number of occasions this season playing for the reserves, he can be a frustrating player but the talent is there. He needs to switch it on more. During this season the defender managed to get his first full Ireland cap, with the Irish setup having high hopes for him, but does Neil Lennon?
Afolabi can give Celtic something a bit different going forward and you’d like to think Celtic might give him a chance next term. However, there are just no guarantees.
