Opinion: Why the Media Push for Celtic to Make Expensive Mistake?

CELTIC have had at least three bad transfer windows in a row when it comes to strengthening the positions they need and losing big players.

It’s no secret Lee Congerton appeared to be over his head in the role and the leaked document from this week only proves this.

Celtic must get their act together and start doing business the right way after missing out on key targets again and again. However, the media this week have been forcing one name on Celtic fans and it’s rather peculiar.

While the scouting system hasn’t been covered in glory, the notion from many media outlets that Celtic would be lucky to get Phil Jagielka in at the age of 36 is absolutely absurd. Soundbites from pundits and ex-players speaking on behalf of the club or the player trying to force the issue seems bizarre when from the outside Celtic have no interest in Phil and vice versa.

People who suggest Celtic should pay anywhere over 10kpw for a 36-year-old regardless of history is mental. We have a walking, talking monument to wasted wages in Marvin Compper after all.

Phil has had a great career and has made a lot of money for himself. He will no doubt get more than what you or I would call ‘decent money’ in a lower table Premier League side or a Championship side.

The people buzzing over a Jagielka move to Celtic would have probably also told you The Rangers were a dead cert for the league after signing 38-year-old Defoe from Bournemouth. Paying an eye-watering amount on wages to see the lad take a few tumbles in the box.

Celtic need to be more inventive than signing a guy whose best days are gone.
