Defender Wants Out: Celtic Playing Dangerous Game in January Transfer Window – Opinion

BRENDAN RODGERS knows what positions he needs to fill immediately, but the summer sideshow which is Dedryck Boyata is about to raise its ugly head once again leaving the Celtic manager with more on his plate.

With the defender’s agent speaking this week about Boyata and Celtic not even being in dialogue with no chance of a new deal being signed, the player is just weighing up the options he has in front of him.

This means Boyata is likely to sign a pre-contract with another side in the coming weeks as he looks to sort out his future.

If this happens, Celtic have one of two choices; both aren’t ideal.

  • The bhoys either sell the defender for some sort of fee to get some money for him, letting him go in January.
  • Rodgers keeps him at the club, and Boyata sees the rest of his contract out with his teammates and fans knowing he’s not fully committed to Celtic.

It’s stick or twist.

Apart from the Ibrox game where the Belgian Star was woeful, he has been a consistent and robust defender since coming back into the squad this summer.

Celtic would HAVE to go out and find a replacement if they do let him go. It becomes even more critical when you consider Filip Benkovic is off at the end of the season.

If Celtic don’t act now they will have a brand new centre-back pairing for Euro qualifiers come the summer – that is a dangerous game.
