It doesn’t seem so long ago we were hailing ‘la gran muralla’ as a little-known goalkeeper from Newcastle helped thwart the relentless onslaught of a fully loaded Barcelona.
However, a lot has changed since then. After leaving Celtic for Southampton in a £10million deal – Fraser Forster has had mixed fortunes.
From a dazzling first Premier League season when he became one of the best goalkeepers in the league, to severe injury and loss of form.
Fraser came in at Celtic on-loan from Newcastle and quickly became a fan favourite.
He had his critics like even the best players do, but overall he was an absolute sensation in goals for Celtic on a regular basis.
The Southampton goalkeeper started the season as number one but struggled like a lot of the team. The Englishman looked bereft of confidence and was eventually dropped after the Saints 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham on boxing day.
Since then, Alex McCarthy has been in goals for the St Mary’s outfit and even won their player of the season.
Fraser now finds himself at a crossroads at the age of 30. Does the 6ft 8″ goalkeeper continue with Southampton where he has a hefty contract until 2022 or does he crave nights like the aforementioned beating of Barcelona?

Celtic would undoubtedly be in with a shout if they were to make a move for the player.
Even a loan deal to get him off the wage bill at St Mary’s could suit all parties.
Scott Bain has recently been signed to a four-year deal, and he should have a chance to dislodge Craig Gordon who is coming to the end of his career. However, if someone of Fraser’s ability is available, it would be negligible not to explore that option.
Brendan Rodgers has an innate ability to bring the best out of players and give them the confidence to be the best they can.
Of course, this is all just wishful thinking, but we could do a lot worse than bring back the towering goalkeeper.
Should Celtic at least look at this option?
