Chris Sutton didn’t miss with his assessment of Celtic’s transfer window and it’s hard to disagree.
Celtic fans went into deadline day with big hopes. Two strikers and hopefully two wingers. But they left with just one winger and chasing a now free agent striker who has nine goals in the last four years.
Taking to Twitter, Sutton wrote, “The most remarkable window of all time. Celtic have come out of it weaker… at least Celtic are doing everything they can for there to be a title race this season… going into a season with great expectation and excitement after a few weeks the feeling now is utter deflation…”
That quote will sting for many supporters, because it echoes exactly how they’re feeling. After the highs of last season and the buzz of a Champions League campaign, Celtic have come into the new term short in key areas and even shorter on answers.
The squad, on paper, looks lighter than the one that lifted the title in May. Losing Kyogo and Kuhn without getting in ready-made replacements, coupled with the last-minute collapse of moves for both Kasper Dolberg and David Datro Fofana, left Brendan Rodgers’ side scrambling on deadline day.
Yes, Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Sebastian Tounekti have come in, but the latter has never played a competitive match on the right – a position the club desperately needed to strengthen. And for all the talk of versatility, signing left wingers doesn’t solve a glaring hole on the opposite flank.
Celtic have ended the window with questions hanging over every line of the pitch. Up front, they look light, especially with three forwards set to miss a chunk of the season for AFCON.
Sutton’s right. This window hasn’t just underwhelmed, it’s left a cloud of confusion and deflation hovering over Lennoxtown.
