Report: Celtic Open Talks for Uruguayan Left-Back

Celtic have reportedly opened negotiations to sign Boca Juniors left-back Marcelo Saracchi, according to journalist César Luis Merlo.

The report claims the Hoops are interested in bringing the Uruguayan to Glasgow, with early talks now underway.

Saracchi, who turned 27 in April, has previous European experience with RB Leipzig and Galatasaray, and now appears to be on Celtic’s radar as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

A one-year loan offer has reportedly already been made for the player, including a fee and a purchase option, although it’s not yet known whether that bid came directly from Celtic.

Merlo notes that Boca may be open to doing business if the financial terms are improved, particularly around the purchase clause.

Celtic have been active in the South American market in recent windows, and Saracchi fits the profile of a player who could provide competition for Kieran Tierney on the left-hand side of defence. The club currently lack depth in that area, with Liam Scales more naturally suited to centre-back.

Saracchi has had a stop-start spell at Boca since joining from Levante in 2023. While he arrived with a strong pedigree and plenty of potential, a move to Europe could now appeal to both club and player, particularly with Celtic offering the prospect of regular first-team football and European football exposure.

Rodgers is believed to be targeting reinforcements in multiple positions this summer, but the left-back role remains a clear priority. The potential arrival of Saracchi would give the Irishman an experienced backup, one with pace, aggression, and the ability to drive forward.

At this stage, no agreement has been reached, but Celtic’s willingness to engage Boca in negotiations is a clear sign they are serious about making additions before the window closes.
