‘You Dread to Think’ – Andy Walker Slams Celtic’s Summer Standoff

Celtic have started the league season with a 1-0 win over St Mirren, but there’s growing concern over the lack of signings before the Champions League play-off.

In the stands, there’s clear frustration as fans wait for new faces to strengthen the squad. Brendan Rodgers looks just as tense, wanting quality arrivals before a crucial European tie.

The first league game did little to calm nerves. With either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava up next, the danger is obvious: missing out on the Champions League would set the season back before it properly gets going.

For Celtic supporters, it’s not just about money, it’s about the buzz of big European nights and the lift they bring.

Former Celtic striker Andy Walker reflected the mood of many. He stressed how vital it was to sign players early, saying the squad should’ve been ready, players match-fit, settled, and ready to go from day one.

Walker’s comments matched the growing frustration in the support: signings may still come, but the delay has left the team short at the worst time. With the play-off fast approaching, not having the squad fully shaped has added pressure to an already massive fixture.

He said: (Go Radio Football Show), “And, you know, the season’s kicked off. They’ve played their first league game. They’ve got what could be a season-defining tie coming up in the Champions League play-off.

“Because if Celtic are in the Champions League, that brings a level of excitement the supporters are used to. It does define your season. And looking ahead — what is it — you’re guaranteed European football right through to the end of January, I think.

“That’s what Celtic fans want. They don’t want the Europa League.

“But I’m still convinced Celtic will sign players. I’m just surprised at the timing. I’d have thought they’d try to get their business done early, have the players game-ready now — for the start of the season and the Champions League qualifier.

“You dread to think how the support will feel if it goes horribly wrong in that qualifier.”

Walker’s view hits home, getting into the Champions League isn’t just about the money, it shapes the whole season.

With European football until next year on offer, dropping into the Europa League would feel like a flat start to a campaign that needs energy and belief. Rodgers has sounded increasingly sharp in interviews, as the clock ticks towards a tie that could define the early months.

The pressure is building fast. The Irishman and squad now have to get through this period carefully, covering gaps in the team while staying fully focused. The early transfer work hasn’t happened, but with smart signings soon, Celtic can still go into the qualifiers with real intent.

Supporters are watching closely, wanting to see the board act with the right mix of quality and timing. If a few proper additions come in quickly, it could lift the whole mood. But if things drag on, Celtic risk stumbling into the season still short and searching for answers.
