Slovan Bratislava Confident Despite Last Season’s 5-1 Celtic Thrashing

Celtic could be set for a familiar opponent in the Champions League qualifiers after being drawn to face either Slovan Bratislava or Kairat Almaty in the next round.

The tie sets up the prospect of a swift return to Celtic for the Slovakian champions, who were heavily beaten 5-1 in Glasgow last season.

The Hoops memorably ran out convincing winners in that meeting, claiming their first-ever league phase victory under the competition’s new format. Slovan’s defence was torn apart on the night, with goalkeeper Dominik Takac picking the ball out of his net five times.

Despite that bruising encounter, Takac has dismissed any suggestion he would be daunted by another trip to Glasgow’s east end. His immediate focus is on navigating a tricky first-leg tie away to Kairat in Kazakhstan this week.

Slovan have already begun preparations for the long journey to Almaty, leaving a day early to adjust and acclimatise. The Bratislava club know a strong result on the road will be vital if they are to keep alive hopes of a Parkhead rematch.

He said: “The only thing that matters at the moment is beating Kairat Almaty and getting the chance to play against Celtic again.

“Every opponent provides motivation for us – Celtic won’t bring us more or less.

“I’m not exactly jumping two metres in the air for joy over the draw, but nor am I hanging my head in trepidation.

“We have a long and difficult journey to play in Kazakhstan and we have left a day early to prepare.

“We expect an intimidating atmosphere and a real challenge for us. That is all we are concentrating on for now.

“Everyone at the club is only fighting for this game. Celtic can be looked at later.”

Slovan are focused on keeping their minds on the job, knowing they can’t afford to take Kairat lightly. The Kazakh champions are known for being tough to beat at home, especially with the long journey and testing heat in Central Asia.

For Celtic, the draw is both interesting and a reminder to stay alert. Last season’s big win over Slovan will be remembered, but Brendan Rodgers knows European qualifiers can quickly go wrong without the right preparation.

If Slovan do get through, Parkhead would be set for another big European night, with the visitors keen to put right the heavy loss they suffered last year. Until then, Celtic will be watching closely to see how things play out in Almaty.

The Hoops also have their own job to do in making sure they’re ready for whoever they face, but a rematch with Slovan would certainly add extra spice to their Champions League push.
