Celtic Loanee Scores Screamer Just Minutes Into Debut

Jude Bonnar made an instant impression at Ayr United, opening his account just minutes into his debut after joining on loan from Celtic.

Named in the squad hours before this afternoon’s Premier Sports Cup group stage clash against Arbroath, Bonnar entered the game midway through the second half with the home side comfortably ahead.

It took him less than 10 minutes to make a real impact, slotting home Ayr’s third goal past former Celtic youth goalkeeper Aidan McAdams.

The terms of the loan arrangement haven’t been made public, though the deal could potentially fall under the new Co-operation agreements now in place between SPFL Premiership clubs and sides in the lower tiers.

Bonnar, who made a brief first-team appearance for Celtic away to Aberdeen earlier this year, has found opportunities limited under Brendan Rodgers, especially following the recent arrival of Swedish midfielder Ben Nygren.

With an increasingly crowded midfield at Lennoxtown, a move to the Championship offers the 19-year-old vital first-team minutes.

The loan also gives Bonnar the benefit of working under a familiar figure in Scott Brown.

The former Celtic captain is heading into his second season in charge at Somerset Park and is aiming to build on last year’s play-off campaign, which ended at the hands of Partick Thistle.

Saturday’s 4-0 win gives Ayr a strong platform in their League Cup group. They’ll travel to Forfar Athletic on Tuesday before wrapping up the group stage with a trip to face Premiership opposition in St Mirren next weekend.
