Celtic’s pre-season camp in Portugal has delivered more than just physical preparation, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Hoops have spent the past eight days fine-tuning their fitness in testing conditions, laying the groundwork for the season ahead. But Rodgers was just as keen to highlight the camaraderie that naturally forms when players are away together for an extended period.
The Irishman pointed to the friendships built during the tour as a key element in building a united squad ready to face the demands of the upcoming campaign. Celtic return home soon, but Rodgers is confident the benefits of their time in Portugal will be felt well beyond pre-season.
With several friendlies still to come and the league campaign fast approaching, the focus now turns to maintaining progress and sharpening the group further.
He said: (Celtic TV), “It has been an excellent trip for us. It seems like a long time ago since we were in Cork, but obviously coming out to here, players have been able to get a lot of good work in.
“I think what was very important is the camaraderie as well and the spirit that you create when you’re away on pre-season tours. It is important because you are away and together for long periods of the day. I think you also have that social connection as well.
“Physically, the guys are improving, but I think we still have a way to go. There is absolutely no doubt that real physical and mental sharpness is there within our game, but these moments of pre-season are all about the tests, both physically and mentally, and the guys are coping really well.
“They are a wonderful group of young guys to work with, very compliant in the work that we ask them to do, and they do it with a great humility and a great professionalism. And that is why they have had success. So, we have to continue with that, but we also have to keep pushing the boundaries in order to gain that fitness and evolve as a team.
“This trip has been everything that we have wanted, and now we’re into our final days – we want to finish off again with another really good game.”
Celtic’s preparations will continue with further friendlies aimed at building on the strong base set in Portugal. Rodgers’ comments suggest a clear focus on both the physical demands of the game and the importance of building squad chemistry.

The Hoops will need every bit of that unity and sharpness when competitive action resumes, with Rodgers determined to see his side hit the ground running. While the Portugal camp is drawing to a close, it’s been a vital stretch in setting the tone for the campaign ahead.
The real tests begin soon, but if this trip is anything to go by, Celtic look in solid shape to tackle what lies ahead.
