Former Celtic centre-back Moritz Jenz is expected to be on the move again this summer, with clubs in Italy reportedly keeping a close eye on the defender’s situation.

The 26-year-old, who spent this season on loan at Mainz from Wolfsburg, is not expected to remain in Germany, with a new chapter likely ahead. [Fabrizio Romanno]

Jenz signed for Celtic during the 2022/23 season under Ange Postecoglou and quickly earned the backing of the support. His composure on the ball and ability to step out from the back made him a favourite with sections of the support, who dubbed him Mercedes Jenz for his calm and smooth style of play. He featured regularly during the first half of the season.

However, the arrival of Yuki Kobayashi saw Jenz’s game time limited, and his loan was cut short in January. He returned to Germany and later made the move to Wolfsburg, though his time there has seen him loaned out again to gain more regular football.

There was some showing of real quality with the defender, and looking back, it was the wrong call to send him away when Yuki Kobayashi signed. But Ange Postecoglou had signed someone who was highly rated in Japan, and at the time, it was right to focus on the Vissel Kobe man.
