Celtic will be without Daizen Maeda for tomorrow night’s trip to Pittodrie after Brendan Rodgers confirmed that he has picked up a minor injury.
The Japanese forward, who has been a key part of Rodgers’ front line this season, trained this morning but won’t be risked for the match against Aberdeen. Rodgers explained the reasoning behind the decision at his pre-match press conference.

Maeda, however, may still play a part in the following two games, in what is a cautious approach from Rodgers rather than an enforced decision to not name him in the matchday squad.
He said: (Celtic FC YouTube), “Daizen came in this morning with a little niggle. He trained, but we’re keeping him here just to get him treatment just to make sure he’s okay for the weekend and the following week. So there’s no need to take any risk with him.”

Maeda’s absence comes ahead of two important games, including Scottish Premiership trophy day against St Mirren. After tomorrow’s league clash at Pittodrie, the Hoops return to Celtic Park on Saturday to host the Saints in the final league game before they meet Aberdeen again in the Scottish Cup final the following weekend.
The 27-year-old has been in sensational form this season and will be missed. His work rate and pressing have been a massive part of Rodgers’ attack, and keeping him fit will be important if Celtic are to complete the treble against Aberdeen in the cup final.
With Maeda sidelined, Rodgers has options in attack, including James Forrest and Yang Hyun-jun, who could feature out wide depending on his selection. Forrest is chasing the milestone of scoring in 16 consecutive league seasons, which might help make the decision for the Irishman.
Rodgers is being careful with Maeda to make sure he’s fully fit for the cup final at Hampden. Celtic fans will hope his small injury doesn’t turn into something more serious before such an important game, with the Celtic boss ultimately making the correct decision.
