Ange Postecoglou Explains Reasons Behind Celtic Departure

Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has explained why he left the Scottish Premiership champions in June 2023 to join Tottenham.

It was a move at the time that broke the hearts of many Celtic supporters. However, with Brendan Rodgers winning 3 out of a possible 4 domestic trophies since and taking the Hoops to the knockout playoffs of the Champions League this season, Celtic have stepped up a gear in Ange’s absence.

Meanwhile, he has struggled to have any major success at Tottenham, a club known for consistently failing to win trophies.

Ange, who is facing heavy pressure from the Tottenham supporters and a number of people in the English press over his future in North London, took the opportunity to remind everyone at his press conference earlier today of why he joined Tottenham in the first place.

He said: (BeanymanSports), ”I came to this club with a clear purpose and vision of what the club needed and what I could offer. That is to change the way the team plays, to obviously rejuvenate the squad because it was a squad that was coming towards the end of a cycle and to bring success.

“As long as I’m in this position, that’s always my focus irrespective of whatever noise there is or what there may or not been in the future. I don’t see that, that should diminish my burning ambition, my desire and my determination to make that happen. Anything you achieve in life usually comes with a struggle.

”Certainly everything I have achieved in my life has come with a struggle from a professional perspective. This is just another struggle, but never through this struggle have I lost the will to fight for what I think is the right thing to do and I’ll continue to do that.”

For Ange, it is a decision that he may well look back on as the wrong one. It appeared not to be a case of him having done everything he could at Celtic, but instead an opportunity to join Tottenham—one that he believed was too big to refuse. Despite playing no Champions League football at Spurs after two seasons, something he was able to achieve after just one in Glasgow.

The Australian appeared to be very frustrated at his press conference, and with growing criticism, he has looked like a very different person compared to his time at Celtic, where he was calm and composed, taking everything in his stride.
