The former Celtic and Scotland defender has made the decision to leave New Central Park after just 11 matches in charge, a short tenure that saw him struggle to make a lasting impact. Mulgrew’s assistant, Mark Kerr, has also parted ways with the club, leaving Kelty Hearts to look for a new direction at the top.

In the 11 games under Mulgrew’s leadership, Kelty Hearts managed only one win, drawing three others and suffering seven defeats. The team currently sits seventh in the league, just a point ahead of Inverness in eighth, and three points clear of Annan, who are in the relegation playoff spot. The results under Mulgrew were certainly not what the club had hoped for when they appointed him as manager, and with the team flirting with relegation, the pressure has mounted.

Mulgrew’s appointment in January marked a significant step in his post-playing career, as he sought to make his mark in management following his retirement from football. Despite his impressive playing career, where he enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Celtic, and his time with Scotland, the transition into management has proven difficult for the former defender. Although he is highly respected for his playing career, the results at Kelty Hearts haven’t matched his reputation or expectations.

The departure of Mulgrew and Kerr now leaves Kelty Hearts in search of a new managerial direction. With only a handful of points separating the team from the bottom end of the table, the next appointment will be crucial in determining the club’s fate in the remainder of the season. The board will no doubt be looking for a manager who can bring about a change in fortunes and steer the club clear of relegation trouble.

Celtic fans will no doubt wish Mulgrew all the best in his future in management. While his time as a manager has been brief and difficult, it’s clear that his passion for the game remains. Whether he returns to management in the future or moves into another role within football remains to be seen.
