Vaclav Cerny Breaks Silence on Celtic Park Water Bottle Incident

Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny has spoken publicly for the first time since the controversial water bottle incident during Sunday’s Glasgow Derby at Celtic Park.

The Czech international, who was seen squirting water towards Celtic fans while celebrating Hamza Igamane’s late winner, has now addressed the backlash.

He had been subbed off and was running down the touchline next to the main stand when he skooshed water and the fans in the first few rows.

When asked about the incident, Cerny downplayed the controversy, claiming he wasn’t fully aware of what had happened in the moment.

“I don’t want to say too much, I can’t. I find it a bit absurd.

“The stands are so close, to have open water… I didn’t even know what was happening at that moment. I just ran. It’s a derby.” [RecordSport]

Cerny’s explanation comes as both the SFA and Police Scotland continue their investigations into the incident, which could see him banned by the SFA for 8 games.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton had already slammed the winger for “silly” behaviour.

If a supporter had done the same to a player, they would likely have been ejected or even arrested, so the matter should be at least looked into.

With Celtic, the SFA, and Police Scotland all looking into the matter, it remains to be seen whether Cerny will face any disciplinary action.

For now, his response is unlikely to quell criticism, with many still calling for accountability over his actions in one of the most heated fixtures in world football.
