‘Mind the Gap’ – Chris Sutton Reacts as Celtic Punish Rangers Slip-Up

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has reacted to the Hoops putting on a superb second-half display to see off St Mirren 5-2 at the SMISA Stadium, stretching their lead at the top of the table to a commanding 16 points.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had to work hard against a determined Saints outfit, but a late number of goals ensured a crucial three points for the champions.

As Rangers faltered at Ibrox in a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell earlier today, the Hoops took full advantage, piling the pressure on Barry Ferguson’s side. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was quick to react to the result, posting on X:

“Mind the gap. Celtic had to earn that against a spirited St Mirren team. I’m liking Engels more and more every time I see him. Celtic’s bench made a huge difference. Maeda maybe edging Kühn for player of the year now. His goal was superbly taken. Great awareness, great finish 👏”

Engels Continues to Impress

Sutton’s praise for Arne Engels reflects the growing influence of the Hoops’ club-record signing. His composure from the penalty spot to restore Celtic’s lead before half-time was crucial, and his all-around play in midfield continues to catch the eye. With each passing game, Engels looks more like a key figure in Rodgers’ future plans.

Superb Squad Depth Shows

The former Hoops forward also pointed out the impact of Celtic’s bench, and he wasn’t wrong. The introduction of Yang Hyun-Jun and Luke McCowan helped tilt the game in Celtic’s favour, with Yang grabbing a late brace to put the game to bed. Rodgers’ ability to call upon game-changers is proving vital as the title race edges closer to its conclusion.

Maeda Leading the Player of the Year Race?

Daizen Maeda’s tireless work rate has never been in doubt, but his attacking output this season has gone up a level. His goal against St Mirren was a moment of individual brilliance, showing strength, skill, and composure to finish clinically. Sutton’s suggestion that Maeda is now ahead of Nicolas Kühn in the Player of the Year conversation is telling, and few would argue against it.

Eyes on the Prize

With just a handful of games left, Celtic have put themselves in an unbelievable position at the top. While there is still work to be done, performances like this—where patience, quality, and squad depth all shine through—will only boost confidence heading into the final stretch.

Mind the gap indeed. 🍀
