Former Scotland forward and Sky Sports pundit, James McFadden, has weighed in on the future of Jeffrey Schlupp at Celtic after the Ghanaian joined on loan from Crystal Palace on deadline day for the remainder of the season.
With Schlupp’s current deal at Selhurst Park set to expire in the summer, the Hoops could sign him on a permanent deal for next season. McFadden’s comments come amid a period of uncertainty regarding Greg Taylor’s own contract situation, with the left-back yet to agree on an extension at Celtic Park.

Schlupp’s Impressive Start at Celtic
Since joining Celtic, Schlupp has impressed, particularly with his performances in recent weeks. One standout performance came in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, where he played a key role in the 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. Going up against his former Palace teammate, Michael Olise, Schlupp showcased his strong defensive capabilities, a side of his game that is often overlooked given his reputation as an attacking player.
McFadden believes that Schlupp has already shown enough to warrant a permanent move. “He’s certainly been ready to play,” McFadden said: (Sky Sports), “I thought he was excellent against Bayern Munich. Defensively, very good. He’s known for being more attacking, but he has adapted well in a defensive role.”
Tierney’s Pre-Contract and Taylor’s Contract Uncertainty
McFadden also touched upon the left-back situation at Celtic, particularly with Kieran Tierney’s imminent return to the Hoops. The Scottish international has signed a pre-contract with the Hoops and is set to join Celtic in the summer on a four-year deal. However, Greg Taylor’s contract situation remains up in the air, with the defender yet to agree to a new deal.
McFadden noted that while Tierney’s return strengthens Celtic’s left-back options, the club still needs to address competition for Tierney. “Given that Kieran Tierney has signed a pre-contract, maybe that’s the first port of call in terms of strengthening that area,” McFadden said. “When that potential wasn’t possible, Schlupp is an experienced player, and sometimes you need players who are ready to play.”

Should Celtic Sign Schlupp Permanently?
With Schlupp performing well and bringing a wealth of Premier League experience, McFadden believes the Hoops should make a move for him. “You’ve got him there, he is playing games, and you have to see what level he is at,” McFadden added. “You can never have enough good players, and he has certainly shown that he is a very good player. I know he is 32, but he has shown that he is more than capable.”
With Tierney’s return confirmed and Schlupp’s future up in the air, the upcoming months could be crucial in determining how Celtic’s left-back options shape up for the next season. For now, Schlupp’s loan spell continues to provide hope for the Hoops, and the player’s future at Celtic remains one to watch closely.
