FC Twente sporting director Jan Streuer has provided an update on Gustaf Lagerbielke’s future, with the Swedish centre-back currently on loan from Celtic until the end of the season. The defender has been a key player for the Dutch side, but questions remain over where he will play next season.
No Option to Buy in Loan Deal
Interestingly, Twente do not have an option to buy Lagerbielke in their loan agreement with Celtic. This means that, should the Dutch club wish to sign him in the summer permanently, they may face stiff competition from other interested teams. His strong performances in the Eredivisie have not gone unnoticed, and Celtic may also have their own plans for him.

Impressive Season in the Eredivisie
Lagerbielke has been a standout performer for Twente, making 24 league appearances and scoring two goals. His contributions have helped Twente remain competitive, with the club currently sitting sixth in the Eredivisie—just one point off the top three. His European campaign also saw him feature in the Europa League knockout play-offs, though Twente were dramatically eliminated by Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt last week.
Streuer: Decision Lies with Celtic
Speaking on ESPN Goedemorgen Eredivisie, Streuer acknowledged that Twente’s ability to retain Lagerbielke depends on Celtic’s stance.
“We’ll have to wait and see. It’s also important what Celtic wants. Do they want to keep him? Do they see it in him or not?
“For us, he is a good player. He has a good mentality and is a good header. He is getting better and better. But you have no idea what Celtic wants. Do they have good players there? Maybe they want to loan him out for another year. We have to wait and see.”

What Next for Lagerbielke?
With his form improving and valuable experience gained in the Eredivisie, Celtic will have to decide whether to reintegrate him into their squad or consider selling him in the summer. Lagerbielke’s time in the Netherlands has proven he can perform at a high level, and Twente will likely push to keep him. However, should Celtic feel he has a role to play at Parkhead, he may yet return to Glasgow next season.
As summer approaches, the decision on Lagerbielke’s future will be one for Celtic to make. Twente remain interested, but they will need to wait for clarity from the Hoops regarding the situation.
