Taylor or Schlupp? Petrov Weighs In on Celtic’s Left-Back Dilemma

With Celtic preparing for their Champions League second-leg clash against Bayern Munich, Brendan Rodgers faces a big decision at left-back.

Should he stick with Greg Taylor, who started the first leg, or throw January signing Jeffrey Schlupp into the deep end at the Allianz Arena?

The debate has split the Celtic support. Taylor’s performance last week received mixed reviews, while Schlupp impressed against Dundee United at the weekend. But, when it comes to European experience and familiarity with the team, Taylor has the edge.

“I would play Taylor, at the moment. There is no doubt about it. I questioned Taylor’s positioning when Olise scored. Just pulling away from that centre-back. You don’t leave that space. As soon as you pull away. Just stay in and let him go on his right foot.

“Or, delay him and just let somebody come to help you. I know it’s easy to say. But those kinds of players, with those qualities, they just change so quickly.

“But I play Taylor, definitely. Schlupp, I think he’s a good signing, but I think he needs to get up to speed with his fitness.”

Rodgers is notoriously loyal to players who have delivered consistently for him. Greg Taylor, despite fan criticism, has been a regular under the manager.

But, Jeffrey Schlupp’s versatility and experience might tempt Rodgers to spring a surprise.

Taylor’s tactical understanding may give him the edge from the start, with Schlupp ready to come on if Celtic are chasing a goal.

Rodgers will confirm his decision when his team selection comes out shortly before kick off.

CeltsAreHere have Taylor starting in the predicted lineup, but the debate still rings on in the attacking third of the pitch between Idah and Jota, which would impact where Daizen Maeda starts.
