Callum McGregor’s Plea: Celtic Must Keep Kyogo Amid Transfer Speculation

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has discussed the uncertain future of Kyogo Furuhashi at the club, with the Japanese striker linked with a move to MLS side Atlanta United.

Atlanta, who are managed by former Hoops boss Ronny Deila with Kenny Miller as his assistant, are said to be interested in a £10 million move for Kyogo when the transfer window opens on January 31st and runs until April 23rd.

However, McGregor is desperate to see Kyogo stay, with the Celtic striker netting a brace against Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday.

McGregor said: (Daily Mail), “He’s a top player and has given us so many good memories in such big games.

“He’s been the difference; he’s been decisive for us. I’ve probably run out of superlatives for him, to be honest. But he’s still such a huge and important part of what we’re doing and we’re really lucky to have him as well.

“So, I’m sure that the club will want to keep him as long as we can because he’s a huge player for us and, again, in sticky games like this, he can come in and make the difference and that’s what you need for your strikers.

“His record’s been incredible since he came in. That’s what this club is. We always want to keep moving forward and, if there’s business to be done, then we want to do it and just keep pushing everybody in the right direction.”

Rumours of a Kyogo move certainly came out of nowhere in recent weeks, with the MLS website even accidentally announcing that he had signed for Atlanta United on Wednesday during Celtic’s 2-0 win over Dundee United at Celtic Park.

However, Atlanta are now said to be targeting former Celtic striker Odsonne Édouard and Middlesbrough forward Emmanuel Latte Lath instead.

Great players will always be linked with moves away, and Kyogo is certainly no different. Given the special relationship that he has built with the Celtic support, at 29 years old, he will be in no rush to leave the club, despite what some in the media may suggest.
