Ex Celt Barry Robson Secures Surprise Return to Management

Former Celtic midfielder Barry Robson last night secured a surprise return to management, taking charge of Scottish Championship outfit Raith Rovers.

The Kirkcaldy side lost their previous boss, Neill Collins, to USL Championship side Sacramento Republic after a release clause in his contract was activated.

They were on the hunt for a new gaffer for just over a week until Robson got the job, putting pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal at Stark’s Park.

The Raith gig is only Robson’s second of his managerial career. He rose through the coaching ranks at Aberdeen to eventually get the top job at Pittodrie.

The 46-year-old spent little over a year in charge of the Dons, getting them a third-place Scottish Premiership finish and resultant European group stage football.

He was rather harshly sacked and replaced by Peter Leven on an interim basis midway through last season.

Now, he takes charge of a Raith side who currently sit sixth in Scotland’s second tier, eight points away from the play-off spots.

They’ve won three games on the bounce, though, and Robson’s first game in charge this weekend will coincidentally be against his old Celtic teammate, Scott Brown.

Raith travel to face Ayr United on Saturday, with The Honest Men sitting third in the table.

Celtic fans will keep a keen eye on the contest and, indeed, the progress of Raith and Ayr throughout the remainder of this season.
