Arne Engels Shines for Celtic in Motherwell Win Ahead of Ibrox Test

Celtic club-record signing, Arne Engels, has certainly had his ups and downs in just under four months at the club.

However, this afternoon against Motherwell, he was a standout in an impressive win.

Engels, who was signed as a replacement for Matt O’Riley, who departed the club in the summer for a reported £25 million plus add-ons to Brighton, had big boots to fill.

However, he has since shown glimpses of the quality he brings and, despite criticism over the last six weeks, has fought back in style.

With a goal from the penalty spot to open the scoring against Motherwell this afternoon in first-half stoppage time and a great delivery from a corner in the 57th minute, which eventually found Daizen Maeda for a goal, the Belgian had a direct hand in Celtic’s first two goals before going off in the 72nd minute.

Despite all the criticism and the weight of his hefty price tag, at just 21 years old, the future for Engels at Celtic looks very bright.

With his performance this afternoon earning him a Man of the Match award post-match, the Belgian midfielder is finding his feet at Celtic.

He is not a like-for-like replacement for O’Riley, often choosing to drop deeper at times.

However, he is just as capable of scoring, and his added physicality brings a new dimension to this Hoops side that was previously lacking last season.

With a huge week ahead for Celtic, Engels will look to play his part at Celtic Park on Sunday against St Johnstone and at Ibrox in a week’s time against Rangers.
