Phone-call, Holiday, Italian Restaurant: How Kasper Schmeichel Signed for Celtic

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has detailed how he signed for the club on a free transfer in the summer.

After the retirement of Joe Hart, the Hoops were on the lookout for a new number one going into the 2024/25 season.

Brendan Rodgers opened his phonebook and sought out Schmeichel, whom he worked with for over three years at Leicester City, as a viable option. The veteran was up for the move, and rest, as they say, is history.

Only a few months into his time in Glasgow, the great Dane has established himself as a fan favourite.

Schmeichel has been a considerable improvement on his good friend Hart and came up trumps in last weekend’s Premier Sports Cup final, crucially saving Ridvan Yilmaz’s spot-kick to propel the Celts to glory.

Particularly on a free, the 38-year-old was arguably the Hoops’ finest summer acquisition, and recently, Schmeichel has detailed the process of how he signed for Celtic: “I had a text exchange with Brendan, which we have done a lot of times since I have left Leicester,” he said (Fozcast Podcast via RecordSport).

“I was going on holiday with my family, and a couple of hours before we left for the airport, Brendan texted me and asked, ‘Do you have 10 minutes for a chat?’ he asked me my plans and what was going on, and we basically agreed everything within 10 minutes.

“The Euros finished, and I think I ended up having 12 days holiday. That is more than the last three or four years combined. Brendan kind of said it is important you go on holiday. We will sort this remotely.

“We figured out a doctor and everything in Italy to do the scans and medical. I signed sitting in an Italian restaurant and signed the contract. It was a good day.”

Schmeichel joined Celtic on an initial one-year deal, with the option of another. The club hold the aces in that regard and can trigger said extension at any given time [The Herald].

Based on his performances in green and white so far, few fans would be against another year of Schmeichel between the sticks at Parkhead.
