The Premier Sports Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers this Sunday at Hampden Park could be at risk of a delayed kick-off due to potential pyrotechnic displays.

After significant delays during both clubs’ semi-final matches, there are mounting concerns that similar incidents could disrupt the showpiece event.
In Celtic’s semi-final against Aberdeen, the match was delayed by 14 minutes as thick clouds of smoke from pyro displays rendered the pitch invisible to VAR cameras. Similarly, Rangers’ semi-final clash with Motherwell was delayed by five minutes due to the same issue.
These delays drew widespread criticism, prompting the SPFL to issue disciplinary charges to both clubs for the disruptions caused by their supporters’ use of pyrotechnics.
Ahead of Sunday’s final, the SPFL has issued a stern warning to both sets of fans about the use of pyro. The governing body emphasised that pyrotechnics are illegal in Scottish football grounds and warned of criminal charges, football banning orders, and additional club sanctions for those caught smuggling them into the stadium.
Despite these warnings, some fans may interpret the charges as a challenge, potentially leading to even larger displays in defiance of the authorities.
Any substantial pyro display could exacerbate visibility issues for VAR. This could lead to delays if the video officials are unable to clearly see the pitch, which was what happened last time. Given the stakes and tension of a Glasgow derby cup final, any disruption could significantly impact the flow and outcome of the game.
A delayed kick-off wouldn’t just affect the fans and officials; it could disrupt player preparations and focus. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers previously voiced concerns about pyro delays, stating that they interfere with players’ warm-ups and increase the risk of injuries.
With both sides aware of the potential repercussions, the pre-match atmosphere could be even more charged. The first piece of silverware of the season is on the line, and both sets of supporters are eager to make their presence felt. While the SPFL has organised a controlled pre-match pyro display, there’s a real risk that fan-led displays could push the limits, leading to delays.
One thing’s for sure: the Hampden showdown is set to be a fiery affair in more ways than one.
