Brendan Rodgers Explains Decision To Start Adam Idah Over Kyogo

Brendan Rodgers has spoken pre-match about his huge call in the Celtic starting 11, which has supporters debating Adam Idah starting over Kyogo Furuhashi against Atalanta in Bergamo in the Champions League.

With Kyogo having scored and assisted against Aberdeen at the weekend, it’s a huge call from Rodgers to show such faith in Idah after an impressive performance from Kyogo.

Rodgers said: (Daily Record), “Adam just gives us that extra physicality. Atalanta are a team that are very physical and you end up in the game in a lot of duels.

“When you have the ball, especially from a deeper area, you are having to play through pressure to the front man and that is one of Adam’s great strengths, taking the ball in.

“He can hopefully be a really good reference for us.”

It’s a surprise call from Rodgers, which most supporters wouldn’t have anticipated.

Maybe that’s the thinking from the Irishman, to catch Atalanta and Gian Piero Gasperini by surprise with Idah’s physicality and hold-up play, adding a different dimension to this Celtic side.

This decision is likely to be a surprise for the Italian coach and his aggressive man-marking system.
