The SFA have introduced a brand-new VAR initiative, which will hold officials more accountable and explain contentious decisions.
‘The VAR Review’ show will run monthly on the Scottish FA’s YouTube channel and discuss every controversial call in Scottish football from recent games.
The first episode launched today, where Head of Referees Willie Collum admitted Celtic should have had a spot-kick when Kilmarnock goalkeeper Robby McCrorie clattered Kyogo Furuhashi in the box on Flag Day.
Initially, the decision was no penalty, and after a swift dismissal, no on-field VAR review was required.
Collum confirmed this was wrong but failed to address another controversial decision from the start of the season.
Indeed, in the first Glasgow derby of the campaign, Nicolas Kuhn was set free in behind Rangers’ defence by Callum McGregor.
The German then found Kyogo in the box, who made no mistake from close range.
After a VAR review, though, the goal was disallowed for an offside in the build-up on Kuhn.
Later, when the traditional lines appeared alongside a still image of when the through ball from McGregor was played, the decision was debatable.
Celtic went on to win the match by three goals to nil, but Brendan Rodgers and the club’s supporters would have undoubtedly liked some clarity on the contentious offside call.
Even if it was indeed off, hearing Collum’s explanation of the decision would have been pleasing.
