During his time at Celtic, Lawal had the opportunity to prove himself following a successful loan spell at Fleetwood Town in League 1. Despite showing potential, the fierce competition within Celtic’s midfield, particularly from established players like Callum McGregor and Tomoki Iwata, meant that Lawal found opportunities for regular first-team action limited.
Ultimately, Brendan Rodgers did not see enough from Lawal to integrate him into the team’s plans permanently. With McGregor firmly holding the starting position and Iwata as backup, Lawal would have remained third choice in the holding midfield role, prompting the decision to allow him to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The move to Stoke City comes with a four-year contract, promising Lawal a fresh start and more consistent playing time. Celtic will receive about £3 million from the transfer, a deal beneficial for all parties involved.
