Celtic Women have learned their initial opponents for the upcoming Champions League campaign.

The Ghirls made history last season, winning their maiden SWPL title. In doing so, they ensured Celtic became the first Scottish club to have both their men’s and women’s sides win their respective top flights in the same year.
As a result of their domestic success, Elena Sadiku’s side gained entry into Champions League qualifying for the new campaign. This afternoon, they learned their initial opponents.
In Round One of qualifying, the Celts have been drawn into Group 3 where they will play out a mini tournament.
KuPS Kuopio of Finland are the semi-final opponents on the 4th of September. Win, and the Ghirls make it into the final of the Group where FC Gintra or Agarista CSF Anenii Noi lay in wait.
If Sadiku’s team then win the final, they will play out a two-legged tie with one of the other Group winners or one of the champions from the top five to seven European leagues.
Get through that, and they will play in the Champions League group stage for the first time.
It is a long and arduous path for Celtic Women to even just make it into the group stage of European club football’s elite competition, but by doing so they would make history.
