Celtic are working hard to secure Paulo Bernardo on a permanent basis from Benfica, aiming to cut the initial agreed £6 million-plus fee.
This renegotiation effort comes after a successful loan spell for Bernardo at Celtic, where his performances have clearly made a strong impression on manager Brendan Rodgers.
The manager clearly trusts the Portuguese midfielder, using him in some shape or form in every Champions League fixture this season, after he was fielded in Benfica’s run in the tournament in the 22/23 season.
He has found it hard to get a run of starts but showed some promising glimpses and moments of quality.
Recent reports from RecordSport highlighted that Celtic are optimistic about reducing the upfront costs associated with the transfer.
The Daily Mail, via RecordSport, has now provided further details on the proposed financials of the deal, indicating that Celtic’s current offer stands at around £3.5 million. This amount would be nearly half of the previously agreed sum, with Celtic proposing to pay £3 million upfront.
The remaining £500,000 would be structured as add-ons, based on specific performance milestones Bernardo achieves with the club.
Additionally, Benfica would receive a percentage of any future sale should Bernardo be sold by Celtic to another club.
Bernardo himself is reportedly open to the move, welcoming the chance to continue his development in Glasgow under a long-term agreement.
