Glasgow City Council has expressed its willingness to collaborate with Celtic to organise official trophy celebration parties in the future, despite acknowledging the significant logistical challenges involved. This comes in response to widespread calls for a fan zone in Glasgow after tens of thousands of supporters flocked to the city centre following the cinch Premiership trophy presentation a fortnight ago.
A council spokesperson confirmed that discussions about organised celebrations have taken place with both Celtic and Rangers in the past. The council remains open to facilitating such events in the years ahead. The spokesperson told The Herald, “We’ve spoken to both clubs about organised celebrations in various forms, but we have been clear these come with a set of challenges and do require an event organiser.”

The council emphasised the need for structured planning to ensure successful and safe events. “Should any club wish to pursue organised celebrations, at any scale, we would welcome this and work with them to review any plans. Open top bus parades have been part of our discussions and plans are in place should either make a request for such an event,” the spokesperson added.
Addressing concerns about the practicalities of hosting such events, the spokesperson mentioned, “There are licensing and legislative requirements around an alternative uses for either stadia, but we have committed to work with the clubs to ensure we can deal with these appropriately.”
The Need for an Official Fan Zone
The recurring celebrations by Celtic fans in the Trongate area have highlighted the need for an official fan zone. These gatherings, which have become almost an annual event, see thousands of fans converging on the city centre to celebrate their club’s triumphs. Despite the council’s awareness of these gatherings, there has been little action to facilitate or organise them.
In contrast, many cities and countries actively support and celebrate their vibrant football cultures on days of significant achievement. Glasgow’s approach has often been seen as punitive towards Celtic fans, despite the majority of supporters behaving responsibly during these celebrations. Establishing an official fan zone would not only provide a controlled environment for fans to celebrate but also help manage the logistical challenges associated with such large gatherings.
Celtic fans and the club itself would undoubtedly welcome a dedicated space for future celebrations. An official fan zone would enhance the festive atmosphere while ensuring public safety and compliance with city regulations. The collaboration between the council and Celtic on such initiatives could pave the way for more organised events.
