In the lead-up to the Scottish Cup final, Brendan Rodgers couldn’t help but chuckle when discussing James Forrest’s recent resurgence and his surprise inclusion in Scotland’s squad for the Euros during a pre-match press conference.
At the start of the season, James Forrest found himself on the fringes of the Celtic squad, not selected for many matches. However, a stroke of fate saw him return to the team when Celtic were desperate for fit players due to injuries and suspensions during the semi-final against Aberdeen. Forrest seized his chance, with his performances playing a pivotal role in driving Celtic to the Scottish Cup final and revitalizing his own season in the process.
Forrest’s comeback didn’t stop there. His stellar display earned him a spot in the starting lineup for the remainder of the league fixtures, culminating in Celtic clinching the title with a game to spare against Kilmarnock.

This late-season surge didn’t go unnoticed by Scotland manager Steve Clarke, who handed Forrest his first international call-up in four years. With his place in the squad for the Euros all but secured, it marks a significant turnaround for the Celtic stalwart.
Rodgers, known for his wit, remarked with a grin: “He’s had to get his money back on that holiday he had booked.” Jokingly telling the BBC.
The Celtic gaffer also took the opportunity to praise the dedication of the Scottish players in his squad, emphasising how every one of them is eager to represent their country, whether it be in a friendly or a major tournament. Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor, and Anthony Ralston have also received call-ups for the Euros in Germany.
Rodgers’ comments underline the pride and passion that Celtic’s Scottish contingent bring to the club and country.
The Celtic team are all set to take on Rangers in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday. If Celtic win, they will complete a league and cup double.
