Former Scotland goalie Alan Rough has stirred up some controversy by suggesting that Celtic should consider an approach for Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland if he becomes available this summer.

There are suggestions that Rangers could be forced into selling the ‘keeper to fund a summer rebuild.
Jack Butland, who moved to Rangers last summer, has quickly become a key player for the team, earning a nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award. Although the award was ultimately won by Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland, Butland’s impact at Rangers has been undeniable. His performances have been pivotal, keeping Rangers competitive in the title race with numerous crucial saves.
“If Celtic were starting to build I’d get Jack Butland, if he’s available,” Rough stated on PLZ Soccer.
During the discussion, Peter Martin, the host, expressed his surprise at Rough’s suggestion, asking, “You’d ask Celtic to sign Jack Butland?” Rough responded affirmatively, explaining, “If it was on. If he was going to leave or whatever, it would be a good start.”
The idea of Celtic reaching out to sign a key player from Rangers is quite something, and no matter how good a signing Jack Butland could be to replace the retiring Joe Hart, I very much doubt Celtic would even consider asking the question.
Had Joe Hart retired last summer, it is a transfer that may well have happened, but a year on, after playing for Rangers, it’s just not likely.
