Mark Wilson Reckons Glasgow Derby Result Favours Celtic

Former Celtic right-back and now pundit Mark Wilson reckons that Sunday’s 3-3 Glasgow derby draw suits his old team much more than their city rivals.

It was an enthralling crash in the sunshine at Ibrox yesterday with goals flying in left, right, and centre.

The visitors couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, Daizen Maeda knocking home inside the first 21 seconds from an attempted James Tavernier clearance that went pear-shaped.

Matt O’Riley then doubled the Celts’ advantage with a sublime panenka-style penalty although Rangers eventually got themselves level in the second half through a dubious penalty and deflected effort.

Soon after, Adam Idah thought he’d won it with a smart finish but Rabbi Matondo’s late strike ensured things ended in a score draw.

Almost immediately after the game on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Wilson outlined his opinion that Brendan Rodgers would be happy with a draw, but slightly disheartened at the fact his team did lead 2-0 at one point.

He said: “Before the game, it was my opinion that if Celtic got away from Ibrox with a draw, Brendan Rodgers would have been happy.

“However, when you see the way the game then plays out, so in control in the first 45 minutes, two up, could have easily been three or four and for quite a shift in that second period to go against you – even taking the lead at 3-2 with minimum time left – you think it’s a disappointment.

“I think, though, when Brendan Rodgers analyses the full game and getting away from Ibrox with a point, it’s another game that he’s not lost against Rangers, another game goes by where Rangers have failed to beat Celtic in a real meanful game, with 50,000 of their own supporters.

“I think it favours Celtic but because of the balance of the game and how it looked at one point, of course the Celtic manager will be disappointed in that.”
