Charlie Mulgrew Names Celtic Player of the Year Candidate

Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew has named who he believes to be a potential candidate for the Player of the Season award at Parkhead.

Indeed, it is a man who reminds the ex-Dundee United man a lot of himself.

Liam Scales has grasped his opportunity in Brendan Rodgers’ team this campaign. The manager recently confirmed there are currently talks being held over a new contract for his fellow countryman.

Regarding a potential new deal for Scales, Mulgrew was delighted: “That’s good to hear”, he said (Daily Record). “He’s a good player who has done well for Celtic and is possibly one of the players of the year.”

In this campaign, few would have expected Scales to have turned things around the way he has. The 25-year-old was on the verge of a summer exit but he more than took his chance in the team and is now a regular starter.

A left-sided central defender, he reminds Mulgrew a lot of himself: “I have said it before in interviews that, in the way he plays, left-sided centre-half and the way he got into the team and all that, it reminds me a little of my time there and it is good to see it.”

As the season goes on, Scales seems to continually improve. His performances are of a level required by a Celtic player and news of his potential new contract comes as no surprise.

Similarly to Mulgrew, the majority of the Hoops fanbase will be delighted by the update. It is a deserved reward for the player who has more than surpassed expectations in this campaign.
