John Kennedy admits Celtic will need to move on some defenders this January

John Kennedy has admitted that Celtic will look to move on some defenders this January, with competition for a starting spot high at the moment.

Summer signings Nawrocki and Lagerbielke are struggling for minutes at the moment, with Carter-Vickers and Scales the preferred duo at the moment. Stephen Welsh started, and impressed, in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Feyenoord on Wednesday, too.

Celtic also have Yuki Kobayashi at the club, a player who most likely would’ve departed in the summer had it not been for his pre-season injury.

However, John Kennedy has admitted it could be more than one defender who departs Celtic next month.

Stepping in for Brendan Rodgers at the pre-match press conference for Hearts, the assistant manager opened up on the situation at the back, saying, “It’s a position where we have a lot of players.

“In January, there’s probably going to have to be a couple that, you know, maybe going to get game time elsewhere and trim the squad down a bit.

“If anything, the squad is probably carrying a lot of numbers, you know, so there will be a lot kind of on the periphery who we just need to go and get game time, or maybe move on, whatever it may be.

“Everyone will have their own kind of agenda on that.

“But you know, when it comes to Celtic, there’s going to be four or five centre-backs in every squad.

“And at that point, it’s a case of competing with each other, seeing who can push each other and being ready to step in whenever you’re called upon.”

Over time, you’d imagine Scales will drop out of the starting eleven, and Nawrocki will claim a starting jersey, but you wonder where that leaves the likes of Welsh and Lagerbielke, who will undoubtedly struggle for minutes.
