Callum McGregor reflects on Celtic’s Champions League exit after defeat to Lazio

Following Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Lazio on Tuesday night, a result that marked their exit from the Champions League group stages with only a point to their name, captain Callum McGregor shared his thoughts on the loss and the team’s overall performance.

McGregor’s reaction encapsulated the blend of disappointment and recognition of the team’s efforts during the match.

Celtic have gone toe to toe with their opponents in every match, barring the trip to Madrid, and have come out of most games saying that they deserved more. The performances have been there, and there are positive signs to take, but until Celtic starts taking three points from matches, there isn’t much learning being done.

“It’s really tough,” he told TNT Sports.

“We don’t want to come here and be a team that plays football and ultimately gets beat. Again, the feeling is disappointment, but, to be fair, the performance in large spells of the game was good.”

The aim was to play European football after Christmas, and for the second year in a row, that won’t be the case for the Hoops.

January will be a telling window, with fans keen to see if the club backs Brendan with the quality and experience he’s been crying out for since the summer transfer window slammed shut.
