Former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has won a prestigious MLS award. For 2023, the Greek internationalist has been dubbed the league’s best newcomer.
Up for the award alongside Giakoumakis was world superstar and recent Balon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and former Bundesliga regular Eduard Lowen. The centre-forward rose above this duo, with his 17 MLS goals since joining Atlanta United in February proving crucial.

The 28-year-old winning this award goes to show how fortunate Celtic were to have both him and Kyogo at the club at the same time. Both are terrific strikers in their own right but the Japanese hitman had that slight edge.
This made it tough for Giakoumakis to gain consistent minutes. Across the pond, however, he has regularly started and is evidently doing exceptionally well.
He contributed greatly to Celtic and without his goals, the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership title may not have been won. The ex Hoops number seven was there when called upon and had he been at the club at a different time without Kyogo there, his successes could have been even more vast than they were.
